Data Collection
Across is a local-first extension. All indexed data is stored on your device. There is no remote backend and no data is ever sent to servers operated by the developer.
What Data is Stored Locally
- Tab metadata: URLs, titles, and visit timestamps of your open tabs are stored locally in your browser's IndexedDB.
- Tab content: Text extracted from web pages you visit is split into semantic chunks and stored locally in IndexedDB.
- Embeddings: Vector representations of page content are stored locally in IndexedDB.
- Chat history: Your chat sessions with the AI are stored locally in IndexedDB.
- API keys: Keys you enter in Settings are stored in your browser's local storage and never leave your device except when making requests to the selected provider.
Third-Party Services
Across only contacts external services if you configure API keys in Settings. This is optional. Data is sent to a provider only when generating embeddings or AI answers, and is subject to that provider's privacy policy:
- Jina AI (api.jina.ai) — embedding generation.
- OpenAI (api.openai.com) — embeddings and/or chat.
- Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) — chat.
- Groq (api.groq.com) — chat.
- Hugging Face (api-inference.huggingface.co) — embeddings and/or chat.
You are responsible for the API keys used. You can delete all stored data at any time by removing the extension.
Network Requests
No network requests are made to Across-operated servers. Without configured API keys, the extension works fully offline.
